"This vision of what healthcare could and should be - helping people to thrive - calls us to reach a higher degree of commitment within ourselves. Maslow recognized this and later theorized that there was a level above self-actualization. He said that 'the final stages of transcendence involve helping others to self-actualize’. Physicians, along with other healthcare providers and the whole of the healthcare system, including medical education, need to embrace health as being more than just the absence of disease and see our role as helping others to recognize the potential inside of them for well-being. Adopting this focus will not only reconnect us with the higher purpose of medicine but also cause us to re-examine how we practice medicine and re-evaluate our systems and processes, as well as rethink the way in which we train healthcare practitioners. The execution of this idea will only be achieved through team-based, interprofessional care and will require partnerships with people and organizations outside the hospital or clinic. Because, for the most part, health is created (or damaged) at home and work. The increasing focus on population health provides us with the perfect opportunity to redefine healthcare's role and purpose and align our systems so they support this goal. We are not just trying to treat or even prevent diseases; we are seeking to create a healthy, thriving population. This adjustment in focus would not only shift the way we approach population health, patient engagement, and patient-centered care, but also shift the way people live and the kind of communities they create.” - Adam Perlman
